University Of New Mexico Reports Required Training Progress

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Nearly 16,000 University of New Mexico students have participated in training intended to curb sexual misconduct as the university works toward compliance with a U.S. Department of Justice agreement.

The numbers were released on Monday as part of a progress report sent to the department after the university signed the agreement last year, the Albuquerque Journal reported .

The three-year agreement came in the wake of a 16-month investigation in which the department determined the university was not complying with laws prohibiting sex discrimination, and that it had perplexing policies on sexual misconduct and a confusing reporting structure.

The agreement requires the university to conduct training for all undergraduate students by the end of 2017. More than 26,000 students are currently enrolled at the university, but some students are exempt from the trainings.

Libby Washburn, chief compliance officer for the university, said dozens of training sessions are scheduled for this semester, and they anticipate that several thousand more students will go through the training. The training last up to two hours and cover topics on healthy relationships, consent, sexual assault and reporting options. The university did not report how many students still require the training.
