UNM Closer To Getting Chicano Studies Degree

University of New Mexico students may soon be able to get a bachelor's degree in Chicano Studies.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that the regents' committee on academic and student affairs approved the new major this week. It was the second-to-last hurdle for the proposed degree.

The proposal now goes before the full board of regents for approval.

The four-decades-old Chicano Studies Program at UNM focuses on the Mexican American community from cultural, political and social science perspectives. The curriculum includes courses on gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, and history and heritage.

Currently, students in the program can obtain only a minor, or 24 hours-worth of curriculum. A bachelor's degree would require 36.
