UNM Paper Suspends Print Publication In Protest

The University of New Mexico student newspaper is suspending print publication to protest Central New Mexico Community College's decision to temporarily pull the plug on its weekly student newspaper.

The Daily Lobo calls the move a violation of students' rights to freedom of speech and freedom of the press. The Daily Lobo will continue to publish online.

Central New Mexico suspended publication of the CNM Chronicle on Tuesday in response to an issue that focuses on sexual orientation and other sex-related topics.

Administrators say the content was offensive and inappropriate for the school's mission.

College spokesman Brad Moore says the issue drew complaints. He says administrators felt it is time to reevaluate the newspaper's structure and oversight.

The publicly funded college pays for publication of the weekly newspaper.
