UNM Schedules New Mexico Child Abuse Summit

  Medical and child protection professionals and policymakers are encouraged to attend the UNM New Mexico Child Abuse Prevention Partnership Train-the-Trainer Statewide Summit 2015, scheduled Oct. 23-24 at the UNM Health Sciences Center.

The event will be held in the auditorium of the Domenici Center for Health Sciences Education, 1001 Stanford NE in Albuquerque.

Registration is open for the summit, which will include interactive workshops to provide educators, daycare providers, caregivers, peer coaches, community-based and government agencies and others with new skills and learning that can immediately be transferred to their jobs, home and communities.

This statewide summit opens Friday evening, Oct. 23, with welcome remarks from Monique Jacobson, cabinet secretary for the state Children, Youth and Family Department. Her remarks will be followed by a keynote presentation from Dr. Craig Pierce, director of the Southwest Family Guidance Center and Institute. The evening will conclude with a two-hour reception.

Saturday summit workshops run from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in four tracks: parenting education and support, child abuse prevention skills and strategies, reducing barriers to children's well-being, and personal and organizational resilience and reflective practices.

Attendees can select from more than 25 topics, including:

  • Identifying Trauma
  • From The Teen Brain
  • Breaking the Cycle
  • Cultural Competence Training
  • Strengthening Families and Communities 

Registration is open. Cost is associated with the track selected based on professional needs and resources. Select classes offer CME and CEU credits. The New Mexico Child Abuse Prevention Partnership is a consortium of stakeholders throughout the state, each with their own mission relating to child abuse prevention and eliminating child abuse. The individual strengths and programs of the member stakeholders are augmented by their affiliation with other like-minded organizations. The collaboration of NM-CAPP with these stakeholder organizations provides a structured, unified, diverse and comprehensive approach to the prevention of child abuse.
