UNM Team Gets $1 Million Grant For HIV Research

By KRWG News

Albuquerque, New Mexico – ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRWG) A team at UNM is getting a $1 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for HIV research.

The funding will go to a team led by Vojo Deretic, who is a professor and chair of UNM's Molecular Genetics and Microbiology Department. The team is studying a molecular process known as autophagy, which uses the human body's immune system to prevent infectious diseases.

Deretic says his team got its first grant from the foundation two years ago to develop the feasibility of applying autophagy to HIV. The new grant, he says, will enable the team to screen for drugs that can intercept the virus at several stages.
