UPDATE: Albuquerque Detective Shot By Another Officer

Albuquerque police say an undercover detective is in critical condition after being shot by another undercover officer while conducting a narcotics operation.

The shooting happened just before noon Friday near a busy intersection on the city's southeast side.

Police Chief Gordon Eden says preliminary information shows both officers were working undercover and were in plain clothes when the shooting happened. He had no other details about the circumstances that led to the shooting and he did not release the names of the officers.

The shooting happened as unmarked police vehicles surrounded a car in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant around midday. Witnesses inside said they heard a series of gunshots and it was not long before dozens of officers had the area surrounded.

The two suspects involved in the drug bust were taken into custody.

This marks the second shooting of an officer in Albuquerque in less than a week.

A police officer was shot Friday near a busy intersection on the southeastern edge of Albuquerque, marking the second shooting of an officer in less than a week, authorities said.

Dozens of law enforcement agents had the area, including a fast food restaurant, cordoned off with yellow tape as police cruisers surrounded the area. Authorities didn't immediately release any details about the shooting, the condition of the officer or details on possible suspects.

Witnesses gathered near the scene said they saw officers take a man into custody, but it wasn't clear how he was related to the case.

Wallace Anderson, 68, of Albuquerque, was inside the restaurant having coffee with a group of people when he heard at least four gunshots.

Anderson didn't see the shooting but watched unmarked police vehicles surround a car in the parking lot. He saw at least one person get pulled from the car and handcuffed.

"They told us we couldn't leave because it was a crime scene now," he said.

Anderson said he wasn't surprised to hear the gunshots.

"To me, it's Albuquerque. It's a daily occurrence," he said, referring to criminal activity.

Friday's shooting comes less than a week after another Albuquerque officer was shot and wounded after pulling over a convicted felon on suspicion of driving drunk.

The officer injured in that case, Lou Golson, is in stable condition at a hospital and the suspect is being held on attempted murder and other charges.
