Las Cruces – Las Cruces Police have arrested the suspect in Sunday evening's incident involving a hit-and-run accident and an officer-involved shooting.
Rudolfo C. Orrantia, 49, of the 1400 block of Burke Road just outside of Las Cruces, is charged with two felony counts of aggravated battery on a peace officer using a deadly weapon, a vehicle, and one count of aggravated driving while intoxicated. Orrantia is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $11,000.
At around 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 29, officers were dispatched to a possible hit-and-run accident between two vehicles in downtown Las Cruces. A general description of the pickup involved in the hit-and-run, a red pickup, was relayed to officers who spotted it near the intersection of Kansas Avenue and Lujan Street.
Officers made contact with Orrantia, the driver of the pickup, who then crashed his pickup into one patrol car and struck an officer on foot. The officer who was struck by the vehicle fired at least one shot at the pickup before Orrantia fled from the scene.
The pickup was located a short while later by a Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office deputy and the driver, Orrantia, was detained for questioning. Orrantia was subsequently arrested and charges were filed in the incident.
Las Cruces Police officer Manuel Frias, 28, a one-year veteran of the department and the officer who was struck by Orrantia's vehicle, was wounded but his injuries are not life-threatening. No other injuries were reported.
As is standard protocol, officer Frias has been placed on administrative leave until the investigation is completed.
