UPDATE: Man Charged In Talavera Robberies Is Convicted Felon; Ran From Las Cruces Police

A man who briefly ran from police Wednesday afternoon was found to be a convicted felon armed with a 9 mm handgun.

Raymond Isreal Carreon, 27, was charged with receiving stolen property – a 9 mm handgun – and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, a Las Cruces Police officer was approaching Carreon on Mesquite Street when the suspect took off running. The officer gave chase and witnessed Carreon remove a handgun from his waistband and throw it to the ground.

The officer caught up to Carreon in the backyard of a residence and detained him for questioning.

Carreon was found to have a pistol holster on his hip and the magazine for the 9 mm handgun in his pocket. The handgun was determined to be stolen from a Las Cruces home a day earlier.

Detectives learned that Carreon had been convicted of a felony within the past 10 years, prohibiting him from owning or possessing a firearm. Carreon was also found to have eight outstanding warrants for his arrest. Four of the warrants were for residential burglary and four for larceny.

Carreon was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $100,000.
