UPDATE: Three Killed In Crash Near Anthony, NM

The pregnant female passenger in a 2003 Honda involved in a crash west of Anthony, NM Wednesday morning has died as a result of her injuries. The baby girl she was carrying, who was delivered shortly after her arrival at an El Paso hospital, has also died.

Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputies say the woman, identified as 21-year-old Karla Diaz, was the passenger in a car driven by her boyfriend, Andrew Valenzuela, 22.

Valenzuela apparently drove through a posted stop sign at the intersection of Westside Drive and Vinton Road shortly before 10 a.m., colliding with a 1999 Ford F-250 pickup that had the right-of-way eastbound on Vinton.

Valenzuela died at the scene.

An initial investigation showed no one in the Honda, including the 2-year-old son of Diaz and Valenzuela, appeared to be wearing seat belts.

The boy was also taken to an El Paso hospital with severe head trauma. He remains in critical condition.

The driver of the truck, a 56-year-old Anthony man, was treated for minor injuries and was reportedly released from the hospital earlier this evening.

Deputies do not suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash, but say Valenzuela’s body will be sent for autopsy to the University of New Mexico Office of the Medical Examiner for confirmation.
