US 70 Cable Barrier Construction Begins Saturday

Las Cruces, NM: The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) with Smith and Aguirre, Construction is scheduled to begin work Saturday February 2, 2013 along US-70 starting at Del Rey Boulevard exit (151) to NASA exit (161).

Smith and Aguirre Construction will have 12 foot lane restrictions in 2 mile increments. Daily operations will be ongoing Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 am until 5:00 pm, and on Monday through Wednesday from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm.  Motorists will encounter left lane closures as vehicles approach the work zone throughout the duration of the project.

The scope of the work consists of installing post and cable barrier within the median area, along with miscellaneous paving and earthwork from Del Rey to NASA. Working hours have been adjusted in order to minimize traffic congestion during peak hours. The NMDOT in conjunction with Smith and Aguirre, Const. Co. will be working with law enforcement in providing oversight on the roadway as construction is taking place.

Trent Doolittle, District One Engineer stated “the Department of Transportation will be working with Smith and Aguirre on monitoring the daily operations and traffic flow in order to ensure the safety of the traveling public.”

The NMDOT is encouraging motorists to slow down and use extreme caution in and around the work zones. Updates on road projects and traffic alerts will be posted on the department’s web site www.NMroads.com, and by calling 511 in New Mexico or 1-800-432-4269
