USS Santa Fe's Commander To Visit Namesake City

The commanding officer of the USS Santa Fe visits northern New Mexico this week to learn more about the Pearl Harbor-based attack submarine's namesake city.

Cmdr. Timothy Poe says his 120-member crew is from all over the country but that having the city's name on his ship allows the crew to relate with pride to their own hometowns.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that Poe's visit will include visiting ROTC groups, meeting with city officials and attending a feast day at the San Ildefonso Pueblo.

The Santa Fe isn't the first Navy vessel to be named after the New Mexico city.

The original USS Santa Fe was a cruiser that served in multiple major operations in the Pacific during World War II.
