UT Regents Try To Shield Records

The chairman of the University of Texas System regents is fighting disclosure of records to state lawmakers who are investigating the board's dealings with the system's Austin flagship university.

Chairman Gene Powell says disclosing some records could compromise the regents' investigative capability, attorney-client privilege or performance of duties. The Austin American-Statesman (http://bit.ly/ZG2orL) reports Powell has asked state Attorney General Greg Abbott to decide if the system must provide all of the records sought by a special House-Senate oversight panel on higher education governance.

State Sen. Kel Seliger co-chairs the oversight panel. The Amarillo Republican said he'd ask Abbott to respond to Powell quickly.

Many lawmakers have been critical of the UT board for what they consider micromanagement of the Austin campus and efforts to oust its president, Bill Powers.
