UTEP Earns #20 Ranking on Military Times’ Best for Vets List

EL PASO, Texas – The University of Texas at El Paso is celebrating Veterans Day with a No. 20 ranking out of 125 on the Military Times 2016 Best for Vets list. The magazine’s announcement coincides with UTEP’s Veterans Appreciation Week.

The magazine rates institutions on their commitment to providing opportunities to U.S. veterans and other military-affiliated students – active duty, reservists and their families. The University enrolls approximately 3,000 military-affiliated students and employs 325 people who have stated they are veterans.

Many military-affiliated students find help at UTEP’s Military Student Success Center (MSSC) and its partner offices such as the University’s Counseling Center, Career Center and Center for Accommodations and Support Services. The institution also enhanced its academic offerings earlier this year through UTEP Connect, a portfolio of totally online graduate and undergraduate degree plans aimed at students such as active-duty military who want a quality education, but cannot always attend classes in a brick-and-mortar setting. UTEP Connect is part of Extended University.

“We are thrilled to be named No. 20 in the Best for Vets list,” said Beth Brunk-Chavez, Ph.D., interim dean of Extended University. “It’s an honor that attests to the great work UTEP faculty and staff do with our veterans, active duty, and military-affiliated students. The Military Student Success Center is an excellent resource for the entire UTEP community and should be commended for its significant contribution to this designation.”

Clarence Court, MSSC assistant director, took pride in the ranking and in the services the University offers military-affiliated students from when they start to after they graduate.

“We’re proud to be ranked so high, but we don’t plan to stop our efforts,” said Court, who spent 20 years in the Air Force. “We plan to keep going. Our goal is to do more.”

The Military Times based its rankings on the answers to a 120-plus questionnaire, and information from the U.S. departments of Defense, Education and Veterans Affairs.
