UTEP Presents Series Focusing on Race, Authority and Violence in 21st Century America

The University of Texas at El Paso is presenting a series of lectures, panel discussions, and conferences featuring experts from around the country who will focus on issues regarding race, authority and violence in 21st Century America.

High-profile speakers include Nancy Rodríguez, director of the National Institute of Justice, the research, development and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice; and José Antonio Vargas, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who garnered international attention when he chronicled his life as an undocumented immigrant in a groundbreaking New York Times Magazine essay.

“This conference is organized with the idea that knowledge should be useful to our community and that it should extend beyond the walls of our university. It is centered on gender and race because we would like to include issues of police brutality and other forms of violence affecting not only men but also women and transgender men and women,” said Selfa A. Chew, Ph.D., interim director of UTEP’s African American Studies program.
