Alamogordo – Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki joined Rep. Harry Teague (D-N.M.) in a Veterans roundtable where they addressed numerous issues affecting Veterans in Southern New Mexico. Among them are rural health care, homelessness and timely processing of Veterans claims.
"Congressman Teague has made Veterans' mental health a top priority," said Secretary Shinseki. This important effort will raise awareness among other members of Congress on the national stage of wounds of war such as TBI, PTSD, and depression. His effort will also increase support for improved services to treat these invisible wounds."
In his meeting with local Veterans, Secretary Shinseki stressed that VA is targeting the programs of greatest interest to Veterans - the reduction of the claims backlog, the improvement of VA health care facilities, access to health care in rural areas, homelessness among Veterans and jobs for Veterans.
The Secretary told Veterans that President Obama has charged him with transforming VA into a twenty-first century organization. He said that much of the transformation at VA involves adapting to the demands and pace of a digital, mobile, and virtual world.
