Voters In Doña Ana County To Face Ballot Questions For DACC

DACC

In Doña Ana County, early voting is underway for representatives to serve on school boards in Las Cruces, Gadsden, and Hatch Public School Districts.

Also on the ballot, Doña Ana Community College is asking voters across the county to weigh in on a general obligation bond question and a mill levy question.

Voters in Doña Ana County will be asked whether Doña Ana Community College can use up to $15 million of general obligation bonds for facility improvements, upgrades, and construction along with a mill levy question that is asking to fund operations at the Community College.

Eddie Binder, Director of Public Relations and Advancement shares what the two questions will address for Doña Ana Community College.

“The capital funding will go ahead and take care of the buildings that we have and they will be able to remodel them, be able to modernize them, and make sure that the students are working with the most up-to-date equipment that they are going to see on their jobs.” Binder adds, “The operating funds are going to help as far as students in some of the outlining communities that want to do say certificate programs like we have with welding, like with CDL-truck-driving, and we’ll be able to over those at some of the outlining campuses which people have requested from those communities.”

The mill levy question asks for an additional quarter property tax levy per each $1,000 of net taxable value of property within the district.

Myrle Schwalm, a local accountant, and member of Friends of Doña Ana Community College, says an investment in the community college is an investment in the local economy.

“I personally believe that the community college is vital to the economic development of Doña Ana County, and that’s why I’m involved. We need a trained workforce here to develop the economy.”

Early voting is underway in the Doña Ana County Clerk’s office during regular office hours through January 30th.

Election day is February 3.
