Walmart Announces New Market In Alamogordo

Alamogordo N.M. – Thursday, Walmart broke ground on a new small format Neighborhood Market in Alamogordo, near Indian Wells Road and Crescent Drive. The store is expected to be open summer 2016.

“I want to thank Walmart for choosing to invest in Alamogordo and welcome this new Neighborhood Market to our community,” said Mayor Susie Galea. “Alamogordo is open for business and this new grocery store will be a great economic driver with the construction and permanent jobs with living wages it will create. They’ve already shown their commitment to this community through $11,000 in donations to local organizations today."

The small format Walmart Neighborhood Market will occupy approximately 41,000 square feet, which is only about a quarter the size of a typical Walmart Supercenter. It will carry fresh produce, deli, bakery, and grocery items. The store will also provide a full-service pharmacy and access to Walmart’s $4 generic prescription program.

“Neighborhood Markets have become a customer favorite,” said Kim Johnstun, Walmart Market Manager. “Customers like having the option of a smaller store, in addition to the larger Supercenter, for quick errands and grocery shopping.”

Walmart has been introducing the small format Neighborhood Market in New Mexico because of its increasing popularity with customers. The small grocery stores are convenient to shop and offer great fresh produce and grocery selections.

“This new store is an opportunity for local suppliers to grow with us,” said Javier Angulo, Director of Public Affairs and Government Relations at Walmart. “We will be looking for even more products from suppliers in the region and doing more local business.”

Last year, Walmart spent $78 million with New Mexico suppliers, which helped support 7,664 jobs.

As part of the event, Walmart also donated money to local organizations including $5,000 Roadrunner Food Bank, $1,000 to Salvation Army, $1,500 to Buena Vista Elementary, $1,000 to Toys for Tots, $1,000 to Love, Inc., and $1,500 to the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce.

Last year, Walmart Stores and the Walmart Foundation gave $18.3 million to New Mexico organizations and nonprofits across New Mexico.
