The agency that provides drinking water to the Albuquerque metropolitan area is the latest to call on the U.S. Air Force to step up its efforts to clean a huge plume of contaminants from spilled jet fuel at Kirtland Air Force Base.
The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority approved a resolution Monday calling on the Air Force to implement a plan to remove ethylene dibromide from the groundwater. It also wants more monitoring wells to track the movement of the plume of contaminants in the underground aquifer.
The water authority says it won't allow the contaminants to enter the drinking water supply for 600,000 area residents.
The water authority's actions come a week after state environmental regulators criticized Kirtland's proposal for cleaning up contaminated groundwater.
