Alamogordo, NM – On Saturday July 2 and Sunday July 3, White Sands National Monument, Western National Parks Association, and White Sands Trading Company will host a Mexican & American Indian Art Market at the visitor center from 10:00 am-5:00 pm.
Experience the rich culture of Northern Chihuahua and Oaxaca Mexico beautifully expressed through extraordinary Mata Ortiz pottery, whimsical Oaxacan wood carvings, and vibrant Zapotec rugs. Join Native American Artists from New Mexico as they create their exceptional one-of-a-kind handcrafts. Enjoy live demonstrations and meet the artists as they explain the cultural history and meaning of their art work. You will find a wide array of handmade items available for purchase including, museum quality pieces.
In addition to the sale, visitors may enjoy artist demonstrations, children’s activities, and showings of a film about the making of Mata Ortiz pottery. Film showings will be at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm each day. Kid’s craft program will take place at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm each day. Author John McWilliams will present, Against the Wind, Courageous Apache Women on Saturday July 2, at1:00 pm in the visitor center theater. On both days, rangers will also present a Tent Talk program at 11:00 am in the dunefield, a Skins and Skulls program at 3:00 pm in the visitor center, and the Sunset Stroll at 7:00 pm, also in the dunefield.
This event is a part of a series of programs that White Sands National Monument is hosting this year as part of the National Park Service Centennial. Join us throughout the year to celebrate 100 years of the National Park Service and 83 years of White Sands National Monument. Our second century goal is to strengthen connections with our communities and inspire the next generation of park visitors, supporters, and advocates.
