Wildfire Near Silver City Prompts Evacuations

SILVER CITY, N.M. – State forestry spokesman Dan Ware says evacuation areas are growing as wind gusts as high as 50 mph push the flames. No injuries have been reported.

The blaze broke out at about 2:30 p.m. Monday in grass and oak scrub and has now burned more than 500 acres.

Grant County sheriff's deputies are evacuating homes along Quail Ridge Road south of Silver City and nearby areas.

Fire crews are trying to focus on protecting homes when possible. An evacuation center has been set up near the Ace Hardware store in Silver City.
