Deming – The Luna County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution that paves the way for an alternative energy project that would put 28 wind turbines in the northeastern part of the county.
The resolution is the first of many steps to help Oregon-based Element Power with the project and outlines the responsibilities of each party for the project.
County officials say the resolution also keeps the county from any liability if the project fails before the 30-year agreement ends.
Opponents say the project will produce too few jobs and would hurt private property rights.
The company plans to build 28 wind turbines in Luna County and another 28 in Sierra County.
