WNMU Celebrates 121 Years Tuesday

Western New Mexico University has a birthday coming up.

The school in Silver City plans a celebration on Tuesday to mark the 121stt anniversary of when the territorial legislature approved its creation on Feb. 11, 1893.

The Silver City Sun-News reports that Tuesday's party will include having professors dress in period costumes.

WMNU was founded to educate teachers and it was initially called the Normal School of New Mexico.

The school changed its name to New Mexico State Teacher's College in the 1920s and it took on its current name in the 1960s.
