By KRWG News

Silver City – Western New Mexico University has graduated 19 cadets from its Police Academy program. The students are now eligible to take the New Mexico police officer certification exam.

Many of the students are already employed by law enforcement agencies in Silver City, Bayard, Gallup, Luna County and Truth or Consequences.

WNMU is the only four-year university in New Mexico to host a police academy. The 22-week program covers several training areas including patrol procedures, criminal investigations and legal issues.

Three degree programs are offered at WNMU that can be combined with the police certification training including the Associate of Science in Criminal Justice, the Bachelor of Applied Science in Criminal Justice and the Bachelor of Applied Science in Forestry/Wildlife.

The application process for the 2012 class begins in August. Interested applicants can apply online at http://www.wnmu.edu.
