Deming – A 24-year-old Deming woman is accused of taking money from a county charity fund.
Yasmin Velasquez was booked Tuesday on misdemeanor charges of embezzlement and felony charges of tampering with public records and tampering with evidence. She was released on bail.
Velasquez resigned from the county Tuesday.
Luna County sheriff's investigators allege Velasquez, as treasurer of the Luna County Employee Charity Fund, falsified records and embezzled money from August through December 2010.
Authorities allege she withdrew as much as $3,800 and later repaid about $3,000.
Detective Lt. Gary Leyba says the repayment is considered tampering with evidence.
He says the embezzlement charges are misdemeanors since no withdrawals were over $500.
County workers contribute to the charity to help residents in emergencies.
