Woman Foils Burglary Try, Fires Shots As Man Flees

cityofdeming.org

Authorities say a 71-year-old New Mexico woman thwarted a burglary attempt but may have gone too far by shooting as a man fled the scene.

The Luna County Sheriff's Office says a man who'd parked in her neighbor's driveway Monday said he was checking on phone service but grabbed her phone to keep her from calling 911.

The woman fired a revolver as the man fled, but Undersheriff Arturo Baeza says the man and his car weren't hit.

Baeza says the case remains under investigation and that it's unclear whether the woman was firing warning shots or felt threatened. He noted the man had taken her means of communications.

Deputies later arrested 19-year-old Rene Saenz on suspicion of robbery. Baeza says he doesn't know whether Saenz has a lawyer.
