Wood Stove Ignites Fire, Destroys Home

Several crews with the Doña Ana County Fire and Emergency Services Department responded to a fire in the 100 block of Schneberger Road in Chaparral Sunday morning, which investigators say was caused by a wood stove that was left unattended.

The first engine arrived 10 minutes after a call was made to 911, alerting first responders that a single-wide mobile home was fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters from Chaparral, Chamberino, La Union, La Mesa and Otero County worked to bring the fire under control in just under an hour.

One firefighter was reportedly injured and had to be transported to an area hospital. His injuries were described as non-life threatening and he was released the same day. No other injuries were reported.

The home is considered a total loss with damages estimated at $10,000. The family who lived there is reportedly staying with other family members.

No one was home when the fire started.
