"Zero Tolerance" Seatbelt Campaign In Las Cruces

May 21, 2013

The Las Cruces Police Department, in cooperation with the New Mexico Department of Transportation and law enforcement agencies throughout the state, is participating in a zero-tolerance Click It or Ticket Campaign for two weeks ending June 2.

Statistics gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show an 18 percent decrease in seat belt usage during nighttime hours. The decreased usage of seat belts during nighttime hours combined with more instances of speeding and drunk driving elevate the possibility of being seriously injured or killed in a motor vehicle crash.

The message of this year’s campaign – Click It or Ticket – Day or Night – is intended to convey the importance of utilizing seat belts and child safety seats at all hours and anytime a vehicle is in motion.

The Click It or Ticket campaign runs statewide for two weeks, May 20 through June 2. In 2012, 61 law enforcement agencies in New Mexico participated in Click It or Ticket and issued a total number of 6,894 citations during the campaign.
