Teens Arrested In Las Cruces Burglaries

Las Cruces – Las Cruces Police have charged two teenagers for a pair of home burglaries.

Gabriel Polanco and Albert Terrazas, both 17, are charged with two counts of residential burglary and two counts of conspiracy. Both teens were handed juvenile Class III citations and booked into the juvenile section of the Dona Ana County Detention Center.

"Operation Lockdown" To Focus On DWI

Las Cruces – The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) has been setting up forces with law enforcement agencies throughout Dona Ana, Luna, Grant, Hidalgo, Sierra, and Socorro Counties. These agencies include; New Mexico State Police, City of Las Cruces, City of Deming, City of Sunland Park, City of Silver City, City of Socorro, Dona Ana County, Grant County, Luna County and Sierra County. Attendees of this operation will also have assistance from the Motor Transportation Department and the Dona Ana Mount Range Patrol.

Sunland Park Official Facing Charges

Sunland Park – An Arrest Warrant was issued earlier this morning for the arrest of CHRISTIAN LIRA, age 27, of the 120 block of Aspen Road, Sunland Park, New Mexico.

LIRA, a City Councilor for the City of Sunland Park, has been charged with one fourth degree felony count of False Imprisonment, one third degree count of Bribery of a Witness (Threats) (False Testimony) and one misdemeanor count of Battery against a Household Member.

Magistrate Judge Ken Wigenroth set bond at $16,000.00 Surety.

Lordsburg Airport Gets Funds

Lordsburg – The Lordsburg airport has been awarded a $137,823 grant to install an automated weather observation system.

Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., says the U.S. Department of Transportation funds will help airport officials provide pilots with accurate weather information.

Bingaman calls the funding "a good investment in the city's future."

The Decade of Discovery symposium began Tuesday and continues through Thursday.

It celebrates the 10th anniversary of the National Landscape Conservation System.

Richardson At Climate Summit

New Mexico – New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is in the nation's capital to speak at a meeting on climate change.

The Democratic governor is a keynote speaker Wednesday at the National Climate Adaptation Summit in Washington, D.C.

The three-day meeting is to look at what's needed to prepare for climate change and its potential effects on water, food, energy and other matters.

Higher Costs For Texas Retirees

Texas – The board of the Employees Retirement System of Texas has approved higher health care co-payments for participants as medical costs go up.

Board members cited unexpected higher health care costs and underfunding from the Texas Legislature.

The changes approved Tuesday in Austin take effect Sept. 1.

The plan provides health insurance for about 500,000 state retirees and workers and their dependents. The co-payment increase comes as Texas faces a projected budget shortfall as high as $18 billion next year.

Auburn Administrator Named NMSU Dean Of Arts And Sciences

Las Cruces – Christa D. Lowder Slaton, associate dean for educational affairs and graduate studies for the College of Liberal Arts at Auburn University, has accepted an appointment as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at New Mexico State University.

NMSU President Barbara Couture noted Slaton's strength as an administrator and a highly accomplished educator.

Las Cruces – A 29-year-old man was arrested early this morning after he physically assaulted his ex-girlfriend and threatened her with a rifle.

Eric A. Cevallos, of 301 Roadrunner Parkway, is charged with two counts of aggravated battery against a household member, two counts of battery against a household member and one count of aggravated assault using a deadly weapon.

Lawmaker: Up To 1200 Troops And $500 Million For Border Security

New Mexico – An Arizona congresswoman says the Obama administration will announce that it will send as many as 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to improve border security.

Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords also says in a statement Tuesday that President Barack Obama will request $500 million in funding for border security.
