Las Cruces – Police in Las Cruces are serious about enforcing the city's recently approved ban on using a cell phone while driving.

A traffic enforcement operation Monday netted 30 violations of the city's cell phone ordinance and another 57 citations for other offenses.

The effort ran from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. just north of the Downtown Mall.

Cultural Diversity awards are given the cities across the U.S. for their efforts to enhance and celebrate cultural diversity in their communities.

Las Cruces – The 2010 White Sands International Film Festival has announced the 2010 program and film selections. The titles include Narrative and Documentary Competition films, as well as out-of-competition feature film selections in the Showcase and Special Events sections.

The 2010 WSIFF will take place in Las Cruces, New Mexico April 15th-18th, 2010. Films will be screened at Allen Theatres Cineport 10.

Texas – Thousands of illegal immigrants paid in-state tuition or received other financial aid at public colleges and universities across Texas during late 2009.

Figures from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board show about 1 percent of all Texas college students, in the fall semester, benefited from a 2001 law granting such in-state tuition.

The Dallas Morning News reported Monday that the figure topped 12,000 students who are illegal immigrants, not legal permanent residents or not U.S. citizens.

New Mexico – Officers from the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish will be setting up roadblocks around the state this spring to collect hunting data and catch people violating game laws.

Conservation officers and officers from other agencies will check for compliance with registration requirements and safety provisions of the Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Act.

They'll also be asking drivers of vehicles hauling wood products to produce the documents required by the Forestry Conservation Act.

Las Cruces – On Sunday, Dona Ana County Sheriff's Investigators arrested and charged REYNALDO D. HOLGUIN JR., age 38, of the 500 block of Juan Diego, who is a suspect awaiting trial in the death of three month old child late last year.

According to Sheriff's Investigators, HOLGUIN bonded out of jail last night after his mother posted bond and immediately went to the work place of his fianc , allegedly a violation of his conditions of release.

Las Cruces – Jahmar Young scored 19 points to help New Mexico State snap top-seeded Utah State's 17-game winning streak with a 69-63 upset Saturday night in the Western Athletic Conference tournament title game.

Troy Gillenwater 15 added 15 points and Jonathan Gibson 14 for the Aggies (22-11), who allowed only five turnovers in a physical game to Utah State's nine.

Juarez, Mexico – Officials say three people with ties to the American consulate were killed in a Mexican border city.

A Chihuahua state prosecutors' spokesman says a couple was shot to death in their car near the Santa Fe International bridge in Ciudad Juarez. A baby was found unharmed in the back seat.

Tuexi says the woman had a credential identifying her as a consulate employee. The man had a document identifying him as a U.S. citizen.

Texas – Census forms are going out soon, and federal workers face their usual Texas challenge of accounting for immigrants who would rather not be noticed.

It's a problem with every decade's census in the nation's second most populous state, which shares a 2,000-mile frontier with Mexico. It's not exclusively a border issue though.

In fact, U.S. Census Bureau officials also are targeting areas away from the border where large pockets of "hard to count" immigrants wind up after entering the country.

New Mexico – New Mexico has a big problem with identity theft. According to the Federal Trade Commission, the state ranks sixth nationally in the number of cases of people stealing identity.

Officer Jerry Worrell said at least one person every day reports an incident of identity theft to Farmington police.

Identity theft occurs when someone uses another person's information without permission to commit a crime.

Various forms of identity theft include credit, medical and criminal identity theft.

Las Cruces – Republican Susana Martinez has earned the top position on the June primary election ballot for governor by outdistancing four other candidates at a party nominating convention

Martinez, the Dona Ana County district attorney, received almost 47 percent of the votes of GOP convention delegates on Saturday. Former state GOP chairman Allen Weh got 26 percent.
