New Mexico – Attorney General Eric Holder avoided reporters seeking comment about his agency's decision not to bring charges against Gov. Bill Richardson and former top aids in an alleged pay-to-play scheme.

Holder was in Albuquerque to give the keynote speech Thursday at the Hispanic National Bar Association's annual convention.

Organizers stationed reporters in an area opposite from where Holder spoke inside a hotel ballroom.

Afterward, he left without taking questions.

El Paso – Mexico and the U.S. are creating a trans-border communications network that will help police on both sides fight crime and violence.

A U.S. State Department official says secure voice, data and video channels, costing about $7 million on the U.S. side, are expected to be online within three years. The Department of Homeland Security and Mexico's Secretary of Public Security are working out the details.

Las Cruces – The wait is over for Las Cruces residents.

They can now get a new license plate featuring a sunrise over the Organ Mountains.

State Taxation and Revenue Secretary Rick Homans says the plate is a great opportunity to showcase a beautiful city with a storied history.

The Las Cruces plate marks the first time the Motor Vehicle Division has issued a license plate named for a city.

New Mexico – The state Environment Department will take the lead in cleaning up a petroleum contaminated area that has hampered construction plans for a new judicial complex for Santa Fe County.

The department and the county drilled test wells after the courthouse site was excavated. The wells revealed the extent of the contamination, which resulted in part from leaking underground storage tanks from former gas stations in the area.

Las Cruces – Gov. Bill Richardson has recognized the state's long-held chile tradition by proclaiming the week of Sept. 5-12 as New Mexico Native Chile Week.

Richardson says the announcement will help educate consumers about the varieties of chile grown in the state.

He says it will also pay tribute to the state's chile growers and farmers.

The proclamation highlights the development of modern commercial chile varieties from native chile plants through research by New Mexico State University.

New Mexico – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has awarded $1.5 million to New Mexico to prevent healthcare-associated infections.

Gov. Bill Richardson said the funding will help the state expand its work to reduce infections in hospitals around the state.

Richardson signed legislation earlier this year to create a permanent Healthcare-Associated Infections Advisory Committee. The committee recently completed a pilot project with six hospitals in Albuquerque, Alamogordo, Farmington and Las Cruces.

New Mexico – The state of New Mexico and airports in Carlsbad and Silver City are getting federal funds to make improvements to their facilities and runways.

Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., announced the money from the U.S. Department of Transportation on Wednesday. He said transportation infrastructure is crucial to attracting businesses and jobs to New Mexico.
