Juarez Dam No Longer a Danger to El Paso

Las Cruces, NM – During last year's torrential flooding in El Paso, a major concern for area residents was a water dam in the neighboring city of Juarez, which threatened to burst and inundate the city's downtown region. As KRWG's Marco Grajeda reports, according to the U.S. section of the International Boundary and Water Commission residents do not have to worry about the dam any longer.

Pearce Holds Wilderness Discussion

Las Cruces, NM – Monday, United States Representative Steve Pearce invited members of the community to discuss the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance's Citizen's Proposal to designate some public lands as wilderness areas. As KRWG's Whitney Jones reports, the discussion panel consisted of several members of the community who oppose the designation and only one elected official, for the proposal.

New Mexico Gets New Area Code

Las Cruces, NM – The state of New Mexico is getting a new area code beginning October 7th. last year the Public Regulation Commission voted last year to add the 5-7-5 area code because New Mexico is running out of telephone numbers. As KRWG's Jessica Borchert reports, the change will affect all of southern New Mexico and some of the northeastern part of the state.

Citizenship and Residency Application Fees Go Up

Las Cruces, NM – The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services raised its fees for immigrants applying to become a U.S. Citizen and permanent resident this week. As KRWG's Nazca Warren reports, some people now worry the increased cost will make it impossible for eligible low-income immigrants to apply.

Red Light Cameras a Possibility for Las Cruces

Las Cruces, NM – According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety 22% of all traffic accidents in the country are caused by drivers running red lights. With Las Cruces growing at a rapid pace many residents and city representatives worry this could become a major problem in the city. As KRWG's Stephanie Herrera reports, to prevent this, City Officials say red light cameras will soon be installed.

Attorney General Pushes for Human Trafficking Legislation

Las Cruces, NM – There is growing concern New Mexico could become the country's human trafficking gateway because every other state on the US/ Mexico border has or is considering a law prohibiting human trafficking. Las Cruces Metropolitan Area: Safest in the Country

Las Cruces, NM – Las Cruces and three of its surrounding communities were awarded the title of Safest mid-size Metropolitan Area in the nation by the home and automobile insurer Farmers Insurance. As KRWG's Marco Grajeda reports, the insurance company presented the distinction to the city representatives at a ceremony in Las Cruces this morning.
