Mexico City – The Mexican attorney general's office says top federal prosecutors in 21 of 32 states have resigned.
State office coordinator Rosa Elena Torres Davila says the resignations were submitted Friday, and the office will start screening replacements this week.
Torres provided no explanation Monday for what is the agency's largest mass resignation in recent history.
Among those who quit were prosecutors in Mexico City and Tamaulipas, Durango and Sinaloa, three of the most violent states.
Attorney General Marisela Morales has led a purge of her staff since taking over in April. Last month, the office said 111 of its officials had been charged with fraud, embezzlement and abuse of power, and 192 were fired for botching investigations.
