Aggies Lose Final Home Game

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Freshman running back Larry Rose III ran for 229 yards, etching his name in the New Mexico State record book Saturday, Nov. 22, in a 30-17 loss to Louisiana Monroe in the Aggies’ final home game of the season.

NM State is now 2-9 on the season and 1-6 in Sun Belt play, while ULM moved to 4-7 overall and 3-4 in the SBC.

Rose is now No. 5 all time for single game rushing attempts with 35 carries and No. 7 all time for single game performances with his 229 yards.  The last time an Aggie ran for over 200 yards was in 2003, when Eric Higgins recorded 218 yards; coincidentally against the Warhawks.

“When you [Rose] are up over six yards a carry you are doing some special things. He is going to be a special player and grew up a bit today too,” said Aggie head coach Doug Martin.  “He battled through a couple bruises and he is going to be a special player here for a long time.”

Rose also recorded two touchdowns on the night, giving him nine total for the season.  He now leads the team in scoring with 54 points for the year.

With one game left for the Aggies, Rose has 965 rushing yards on the season.  His 107 yards per game average puts him on pace to be the next 1,000-yard rusher for the Aggies since Kenny Turner in 2011.

NM State’s sophomore quarterback Tyler Rogers finished the game going 15-for-32 for 102 yards and one interception.  Teldrick Morgan had a quiet night, catching four passes for 41 yards.  The Warhawks quarterback Pete Thomas threw for 350 yards and one touchdown with most of his passes going to Kenzee Jackson, who recorded 13 catches for 108 yards.

The 350 passing yards is the most given up by NM State this season.  The Aggies did hold ULM to only 102 yards rushing, which is the best the Aggies have done so far this year.

The first half was a close one for the Aggies, going into the locker room only down by three, 20-17.  Disaster struck when the Aggies gave up their second blocked punt of the year, with the ball being returned one yard for a touchdown.

With the Warhawks up 27-17 going into the fourth, NM State was in hurry-up mode the entire quarter and could never get anything going offensively.  After a ULM field goal, neither team would score in the last 12 minutes of the game, extending NM State’s losing streak to nine games.

The Aggies look to take on Arkansas State in their last game of the season, Saturday, Nov. 29 in Jonesboro, Ark.  The Redwolves are 6-5 overall, 4-3 in Sun Belt play.
