Arizona Sheriff's Contempt Of Court Hearing Set To Resume

PHOENIX (AP) — Contempt-of-court hearings against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio are scheduled to resume Tuesday after an 11-day break.

The sheriff will start putting on his case when a sheriff's official who focuses on compliance with court orders takes the stand.

A sheriff's posse leader also could be called to testify about an investigation that critics say was aimed at discrediting a judge presiding over Arpaio's racial profiling case.

Tuesday will mark the 18th day of the hearings.

The sheriff faces the contempt case for disobeying court orders in the profiling case.

Arpaio has acknowledged that he let his officers conduct immigration patrols for 18 months after the judge ordered them stopped.

The hearings could lead to fines, increased oversight of the sheriff's office and a possible criminal contempt hearing against Arpaio.
