Attorney General Announces Double Murder Convictions Upheld by New Mexico Supreme Court

Santa Fe, NM – Attorney General Hector Balderas announced today that the New Mexico State Supreme Court ruled to uphold the murder convictions and related charges against Rigoberto Rodriguez, who was convicted of double murder in August of 2013 in the Second Judicial District. In January of 2010 Rigoberto Rodriguez and his co-conspirators robbed and shot David Maldonado to death, and then stabbed Connie Maldonado with a knife causing her to bleed to death.

“Our office remains committed to ensure the most violent offenders are brought to justice, which includes fighting to uphold convictions that are hard fought by local district attorneys,” said Attorney General Balderas.

The Supreme Court ruled yesterday, in upholding the convictions, that the cell phone evidence which showed calls between the defendant and his co-conspirators and between the defendant and the victims shortly before the murders, was properly admitted. The Supreme Court also found there was sufficient evidence to support the murder and armed robbery convictions.
