Attorney General Balderas & 27 Attorneys General Initiate Multi-state Investigation Into Volkswagen

  Today, New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas and 27 other attorneys general initiated a multi-state investigation into allegations that Volkswagen altered emissions software on their diesel vehicles to produce favorable test results.

The multi-state investigation will examine misrepresentations and deceptions regarding the 11 million diesel vehicles which were allegedly equipped with software that could be used to cheat on emissions tests.  As part of this multi-state investigation, the attorneys general will be sending subpoenas to Volkswagen. Many states will be reviewing this matter through both their consumer protection and environmental protection divisions.

For a list of affected models, model years and instructions for vehicle owners, please visit EPA’s website at www.epa.gov. The Office of the Attorney General will update New Mexico consumers on any potential assistance we may require from them, but in the meantime, Volkswagen diesel owners who have questions can contact the Consumer Protection Division of the Office of the Attorney General at 1-800-678-1508.

The participating attorneys general at this time include: Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont and Virginia.
