Autism Summer Camp Returns To Las Cruces

The Hearts for Autism fund, in conjunction with New Mexico State University Campus Activities host Camp New Amigos - the 6th annual summer camp for children living with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) on June 1st-5th at the NMSU Activity Center.

Autism is a spectrum of disorders that affect behavior, communication and social interaction. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report one out of every 68 kids in the United States has autism.  Las Cruces Public Schools reports it alone provided special education services to 286 students with autism in the 2014-2015 school year.

“There’s no place like Camp New Amigos in southern New Mexico,” said Camp Director Melinda Shane, Ph.D. “Our camp gives children with ASD an opportunity to attend a “typical” summer camp, in a safe, supportive environment. This is their chance to participate in activities they may not otherwise be able to access.”

Using intervention techniques standard in addressing the needs of children with ASD, Camp New Amigos allows campers of all cognitive and behavioral levels to take part in a variety of activities: archery, horseback riding, swimming, kayaking, arts & crafts, recreational sports, music, yoga and rock climbing - all tailored to each child’s individual abilities.

The camp is for individuals ages 5-to-21 and is funded by Hearts for Autism fund. Parents pay a small enrollment fee, and the camp relies heavily on volunteers that include university students, community professionals, and volunteers desiring additional experience working with individuals with ASD.

“Autism camps are few and far between, and they often cost parents hundreds of dollars,” said Shane. “But thanks to the amazing fundraising of the Hearts for Autism Fund and the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico, parents are charged only $25. We couldn’t do this without them”
