Big Wins For Lujan Grisham, Morales, Torres Small At Democrats' Pre-Primary Convention

Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham

The Democratic Party of New Mexico held its pre-primary convention Saturday.  Here is a statement issued by the party, followed by candidate results:

Democrats from across the state gathered Saturday to make their choices for the Democratic Party Primary and passed a comprehensive platform that expresses New Mexico values and a vision for New Mexico that leverages the state's clean energy potential, empowers rural communities, and supports policies that build strong families.

“The energy coming from Democrats this year is going to fuel victory in 2018,” said Richard Ellenberg, Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. “Our Democratic candidates up and down the ballot are coming to the table with bold solutions that will move New Mexico out of this rut, and ensure New Mexico children have bright future.”

Candidates may qualify for the Democratic Primary by winning 20 percent of the vote at the Democratic Pre-Primary or by turning in the required number of qualified signatures to the New Mexico Secretary of State. This year's Democratic Party of New Mexico Pre-Primary Convention is made up of 1,500 delegates who cast their ballots for the Democratic candidates of their choice.

The 2018 platform was developed through a series of listening sessions held in various locations throughout the state in an effort to bring diverse opinions to the table and ensure New Mexicans from every corner of the state had the opportunity to participate in the process. The result is a comprehensive, value-driven platform derived to ensure the viewpoints of rural, urban, traditional, and diverse communities in New Mexico are reflected. Generally, state party platforms are an affirmation of values that guide the principles and policies of the members of the Party.

“At the beginning of this process, our committee set out to ensure the platform process is transparent and inclusive, and we found that Democrats are excited to be involved,” said Sharla Parsons, Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico Platform Committee. “New Mexicans from across the state have had a strong voice and a hand in the values we express in this platform and the values we hold as a state party.”
