Bike Patrol Gets Boost

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’ Office will roll out a new and improved bike patrol this week, thanks to nearly $14,000 in grant money that purchased eight new bicycles for the unit.

The funding was part of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant through the U.S. Department of Justice.

The total amount received for the bike patrol was $13,958.40, which purchased eight fully-equipped Trek Xcaliber 6 mountain bikes. Each bicycle is complete with on-board tire pumps, thorn-resistant tires, lights and saddle bags. New uniforms were also purchased for bike-certified deputies to include exterior body armor vests.

The bike patrol initiative is part of a closer-contact, community policing project for southern Doña Ana County. Deputies will use the bicycles on special patrol projects in the communities of Chaparral, Berino, Chamberino, La Union and Anthony.
