Bizarre Multi-Vehicle Crash In Las Cruces

A bizarre series of events Friday morning resulted in the crash of a motorcycle, and the collision of an automobile with a bicyclist who was airlifted to an El Paso hospital in critical condition.

Shortly before 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, Las Cruces Police were called to Missouri Avenue near Gladys Drive where officers located an injured bicyclist and motorcyclist. The 36-year-old bicyclist was initially treated at the scene and then airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso with a serious head injury.

Traffic investigators learned that the bicyclist was attempting to cross Missouri Avenue, from south to north, but may have miscalculated the speed of westbound traffic. A westbound motorcyclist is believed to have braked for the bicyclist before crashing in the roadway.

The bicyclist apparently made a U-turn and was struck by a vehicle that was headed east on Missouri. The bicyclist was subsequently airlifted to UMC in critical condition.

The motorcyclist was not seriously injured but is believed to have been transported by private vehicle to a local hospital. The driver of the automobile was not injured.

No citations have been issued pending the completion of the investigation.
