Border Patrol Agent In Texas Stole Grandmother's Benefits

A Border Patrol supervisor in South Texas faces up to 10 years in prison for stealing his late grandmother's Social Security benefits.

James J. Doran pleaded guilty Tuesday to theft of government property.

Prosecutors in Laredo say Doran's grandmother died in 2000, he didn't report her death and her Social Security widow's benefits continued to be paid. The funds were deposited into a bank account that the 54-year-old Doran shared with his late relative, adding up to nearly $109,000 paid by 2011.

Doran remains free on bond pending sentencing.

There was no comment from a Border Patrol spokeswoman on Doran's employment status. But in a statement, Sara Melendez says the agency has no tolerance for corruption or abuse in its ranks.
