Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine at NMSU announces Partnership

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute (LRRI), New Mexico’s premier non-profit research institute has signed a partnership agreement with the new Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) at New Mexico State University and the Burrell Institute for Health Policy & Research (BIHPR), to provide innovative and timely research aimed at improving health practices and facilitating health policy changes in the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico.

“This new partnership marks another innovative strategy that LRRI will be undertaking to ensure that world class research and improved health outcomes are brought to the forefront.  We look forward to sharing our extensive research facilities and expertise to train medical students and collaborate on research with BCOM faculty and the Institute,” said Dr. Robert Rubin, President and CEO of Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute.  “This is an excellent opportunity to forge positive health-related collaborations between Albuquerque and the Southern New Mexico region,” added Rubin.

“This partnership allows us to more cost-effectively provide multi-faceted research training to our students, which is an essential part of modern medical education.  The planned partnerships in basic science, clinical trials, and population/outcomes research will position both our students and faculty to help develop and provide cutting edge patient care and treatments, and to improve population health among our rural and underserved populations,” said BCOM Dean Dr. George Mychaskiw, DO.

“We are looking forward to working with LRRI to build upon our shared interest in addressing health disparities among underserved and minority populations,” added BIHPR Executive Director and BCOM Associate Dean for Population Health and Research, Dr. Hugo Vilchis, MD, MPH.

As part of the partnership agreement, LRRI, BCOM, and the Burrell Institute will conduct joint research for publication, exchange invitations to scholars to participate in conferences, colloquia, and symposia—as well as exchange information in the fields of interest to both parties.  LRRI and the two Burrell institutions will also be able to exchange faculty, researchers and students for study and research.

About the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine

The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) at New Mexico State University is one of the newest medical colleges in the United States and the only one with a mission focused on healthcare in the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico.  Although BCOM is a private and free-standing college that is not a part of New Mexico State University (NMSU), it is very closely affiliated with NMSU and our students enjoy the student life and campus community benefits that come with a major public research university.

In a unique public-private partnership, BCOM’s students have access to all university facilities and services, such as athletics, intramural sports, student clubs and organizations and student health, counseling and learning resources.  BCOM students can also utilize NMSU’s housing and meal services, at an additional cost.  BCOM’s 80,000 square foot newly constructed building is located at the Arrowhead Research Park on the NMSU campus, adjacent to the football stadium.
