"Car Surfing" Leads To Arrest Of Driver On Child Abuse Charges

A 23-year-old Las Cruces man was arrested Wednesday night on charges of child abuse, reckless driving and DWI after a Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputy witnessed someone on top of the man’s car as it was spinning out on the river levee near Shalem Colony Trail.

Just after 8 p.m. Wednesday, a deputy on regular patrol in the area saw Dominic Estrada driving recklessly along the river levee, allegedly doing “donuts” with someone on top of his car.

When the deputy approached Estrada, he determined the person on top of the car was a 14-year-old child. Estrada was reportedly under the influence of alcohol.

Estrada was transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center, charged with felony negligent child abuse, reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. He’s being held on a $10,000 secured bond.
