Congressional Candidate David Baake Responds to Pearce Announcement

Commentary: Following Steve Pearce’s announcement that he intends to run for governor, David Baake released the following statement:  “Traveling around our district, I have heard New Mexicans speak again and again about the need for new leadership.  Leaders who will work to protect our healthcare and defend the middle class.  Leaders who will celebrate New Mexico’s diversity and stand up to Donald Trump’s bigotry.  Leaders who understand that economic development and environmental protection must go hand-in-hand.  Pearce’s decision means the people of southern New Mexicans will have the opportunity to elect just such a leader.”

David Baake, a Democrat based in Las Cruces, graduated from Harvard Law School in 2014.  Thereafter, he spent a year with the Natural Resources Defense Council, working to promote clean energy and protect Americans from harmful air pollution.  He also worked as an attorney in the federal judiciary, advocating for fairness and equality and standing up for constitutional rights.

Baake officially announced his campaign on June 29, 2017, releasing an announcement video and a campaign website.  Since announcing, Baake has spent time touring the district, meeting constituents and political and business leaders, including Senator Martin Heinrich.
