ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A couple who lost their baby while traveling through New Mexico is using an accident involving an alleged drunken driver as a teaching tool.
Zach and Aileen Smith had been driving to their baby shower in San Diego when their vehicle was hit.
Aileen was seven months pregnant, forcing an emergency cesarean section in Santa Fe in June.
The Albuquerque Journal (http://bit.ly/RcOwpU ) reports that the baby didn't survive. The coroner determined that Dimitri died from massive head injuries and bleeding on the brain.
Las Vegas resident Ramon Hernandez pleaded not guilty this week to vehicular homicide and a felony DWI charge.
The Smiths say they're devastated by their loss but will advocate for tougher DWI laws in New Mexico.
Court records show that Hernandez has at least four prior DWI convictions.
