New Mexico State University’s College of Arts and Sciences, in partnership with the Honors College, will host a series of creativity workshops from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, on the lawn east of the Associated Students of New Mexico State University Center for the Arts of NMSU’s Las Cruces campus.
The event aims to generate and harness creativity among the NMSU community with the help of workshops put on by faculty and students from the departments of art, dance, English and theater.
“We want to highlight the importance of creative thinking in all of life’s pursuits, academic or otherwise,” workshop organizer Stephanie Taylor said. “It’s a really unique and open minded event.”
The workshops will approach different sides of creativity, with booths set up for storytelling experiments, creation of still life art, elements of Flamenco and Spanish dances and creativity banners, among other fun activities.
The event is free and open to all members of the community. Students from NMSU and surrounding schools, as well as homeschooled students, are encouraged to participate. The workshops are designed to tend to highlight the creativity in all types of individuals.
“Albert Eistein was as creative, in his own way, as Pablo Picasso. He just expressed his creativity in the mode of elegant formulae and scientific hypotheses instead of as drawings, paintings or sculptures,” Taylor said.
At 6 p.m., Los Angeles-based author Mason Currey will speak about the creative process at the ASNMSU Center for the Arts rehearsal hall. Currey is the author of Daily Rituals: How Artists Work, a collection of accounts from different types of creative professionals of the modern era. Currey’s lecture is free and open to the public, and his book will be available to purchase from Barnes and Noble bookstore representative.
