Crews Closer To Containing Navajo Wildfire

Firefighters say they are strengthening their hold on a wildfire that has charred more than 21 square miles of forest and grazing land on the Navajo Nation.

Fire officials say crews by Friday night had contained 40 percent of the Assayii Lake Fire.

They plan to continue removing debris and vegetation while building containment lines around the fire's edges.

Firefighters say some livestock have been discovered near the blaze.

Navajo Nation emergency workers are helping to set up safe escorts for those animals.

The human-caused fire has destroyed at least five structures and 50 homes are still threatened.

Authorities say the wildfire has forced some families to evacuate their sheep camps in the Chuska Mountains, just east of the Arizona-New Mexico border.
