Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis says that if elected governor she will listen to elected officials in South Texas if they say the National Guard is not needed for border security.
Davis, a state senator from Fort Worth, made the remarks after speaking Thursday in McAllen at an event hosted by The Monitor newspaper and the McAllen Chamber of Commerce. Her Republican opponent, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, was their guest in May.
Gov. Rick Perry last month announced the deployment of as many as 1,000 National Guard troops to the Texas-Mexico border to bolster security. The deployment is estimated to cost $12 million per month.
Davis says as governor she would heed local officials if they requested that Guardsmen be pulled from the border.
