Democracy in the U.S.A.? Democracy activists to unite this August

Commentary: University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, Minneapolis  A large and diverse group of activists, organizers, artists, educators, students, elected officials, and others from around the U.S. are coming together for the 2017 Democracy Convention to strengthen democracy where it matters most - in our communities, our schools, our workplaces and local economies, our military, our government, our media, our Constitution. August 2-6, 2017 at the University of Minnesota, dozens of organizations will unite to host a convention featuring eight conferences under one roof, each exploring different fronts of struggle in the fight for democracy.

Now, more than ever, we must focus on building the institutions and culture we want and deserve so that We The People have the power to decide our collective future. The Democracy Convention will center work on voting rights and accountable government, democratizing global governance, building a democratic peace, media democracy, democratizing education, ecological democracy, democratizing the Constitution, and economic democracy. We bring these these separate democracy struggles together in order to unite them in a common, deeply rooted, broad based, movement for democracy.

Participants are encouraged to register early and secure accommodations at democracyconvention.org. Registrants can make reservations for food and lodging at the University of Minnesota, a variety of nearby hotels and hostels, or can arrange a local homestay.

The 2017 Democracy Convention is brought to you by Liberty Tree, Move to Amend, The Alliance for Global Justice, Fair Vote, Mass Global Action, Alliance For Democracy, Energy Justice Network, Center for Partnership Studies, Global Climate Convergence, American Monetary Institute, Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy, Education United for Democracy, The Labor Institute, OpEdNews, Solidarity Economy Network, No More Stolen Elections!, Voting Justice, World Citizens Association Australia, Womens’ International League for Peace and Freedom, Z Net, Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign, Runaway Inequality, and along with their coalitions.
