Democrats Thank Teachers During Teacher Appreciation Week

Debra Haaland

Commentary:  The Democratic Party of New Mexico honors New Mexico teachers for National Teacher Appreciation Week and invites New Mexicans to share why they appreciate teachers on Facebook and Twitter using #ThankATeacher.

“Teachers spend their lives inspiring kids to learn, and they play a pivotal role in building New Mexico’s future. They dedicate their time, energy, and resources ensuring every student has the support needed to succeed,” said Debra Haaland, Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. “It’s a shame that teachers in our state are threatened and forced to use valuable learning time in the classroom for testing. Secretary Skandera has harmed teacher morale, so much that we our esteemed educators are leaving the state or retiring in droves. We should instead encourage our teachers to expand their knowledge and ensure they have the resources they need.”

“My teachers throughout my entire education were people I looked up to and continue to inspire me--they play important roles in our communities and in our lives,” said Juan Sanchez III, Vice-Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. “Educators in New Mexico deserve to be valued and should be able to spend time in the classroom teaching kids the skills they will need rather than teaching to a test.”

President Obama designated the week of May 1, 2016 as National Teacher Appreciation Week. The Presidential Proclamation calls on all Americans to recognize the hard work and dedication of our Nation's teachers.
